Statement of the President of Koya University on the 21st Anniversary of Its Establishment

To the faculty, students, and staff of Koya University,
Residents of the beloved city of Koya,
Dear people of Kurdistan,

Today, we celebrate a remarkable milestone: 21 years since the establishment of Koya University. Over two decades ago, the late President Mam Jalal Talabani gifted the city of Koya—a hub of science, art, and literature—with a visionary project. This initiative, conceived with foresight and purpose, has had a lasting impact on the people of Koya, Kurdistan, Iraq, and the region, becoming a cornerstone of social, economic, scientific, and cultural development.

Mam Jalal’s vision for Koya University was built on the belief that it would serve as a beacon of knowledge and progress. On the day of its foundation, he described the university as a “torchbearer for science and advancement in the region.” Today, Koya University has fulfilled that vision, proudly standing as the first institution of higher education established outside the provincial capitals.

Over the past 21 years, Koya University has continued to honor the legacy of its founders by achieving significant milestones in education and research. These achievements are a testament to the dedication and efforts of our faculty, staff, and students, as well as the unwavering support from the broader community.

At present, the university is guided by a comprehensive strategic plan that focuses on seven core pillars, designed to elevate higher education and expand community service. Our flagship Aro Journal is now the leading academic publication in Kurdistan and Iraq, setting new standards for scientific research.

Koya University has also made impressive strides in research output, with 895 studies indexed in Scopus, including 403 articles published since 2022. In 2023, for the first time, we surpassed the annual threshold of 150 indexed studies—a benchmark required for international rankings such as Times Higher Education (THE). This success, achieved despite financial challenges, reflects the resilience and dedication of our academic community. By the end of 2024, we aim to exceed this benchmark again and solidify our position as a leader in research excellence.

As part of our mission, Koya University continues to prepare its students for the future by equipping them with the skills needed for the modern job market. Through national and international collaborations, we have established partnerships that enhance the university’s academic and cultural impact. Our active participation in conferences, workshops, and global initiatives underscores our commitment to sustainable development and international standards, exemplified by our membership in the UNAI (United Nations Academic Impact).

To support professional growth, we have introduced various training programs for both academic and administrative staff, ensuring that they are equipped to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving educational landscape.

In addition, our digital transformation efforts have improved operational efficiency, from student housing to admissions and postgraduate systems. The “Green University” initiative, launched with the endorsement of Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Qubad Talabani, exemplifies our commitment to sustainability and innovation.

As we celebrate this 21st anniversary, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to the growth and success of Koya University. My thanks go to the University Council members, faculty, staff, students, and all those who have supported this institution over the years. Your dedication ensures that Koya University remains a beacon of learning and progress for generations to come.

We also honor the memories of Jalal Talabani and our distinguished colleagues, Dr. Azad Ismail and Dr. Qaraman Nader, along with all who have served this university with dedication and passion. May their contributions inspire us to continue striving for excellence.

May Koya and Kurdistan grow and develop toward a prosperous future.

With gratitude and pride,
Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Haseeb Siddiq
President of Koya University
