Koya University Delegation Welcomed by the President of Iraq in Baghdad
A delegation from Koya University, headed by its President, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed H.S. Zangana, undertook a two-day official visit to Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, for a series of strategic meetings and institutional engagements. On the second day of the visit, Thursday, April 17, 2025 (equivalent to the 6th of Shubat 2025 in the Kurdish calendar), the delegation was formally received by His Excellency, Dr. Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, President of the Republic of Iraq, at Al-Salam Palace in Baghdad.
The university delegation was accompanied by Ms. Kurdo Omar, Member of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, and included several senior university officials: Asst. Prof. Dr. Azhin Tahir Saber (Vice President for Student Affairs), Asst. Prof. Dr. Ilham Qadir (Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences), Asst. Prof. Dr. Galawezh Bakr Bapir (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering), Dr. Pakhshan Fahmi Farho (Director of Public Relations), Asst. Lect. Dunya Ibrahim Saleh (Director of Health, Safety, and Environment), and Asst. Lect. Mohammed Karim Saidgul Barzanji (Director of Media).
During the high-level meeting, President Sedeeq presented Koya University's comprehensive Strategic Plan, outlining the institution’s long-term vision, academic priorities, and developmental achievements. Special emphasis was placed on the university’s “Green University” initiative, a sustainability-driven framework aiming to integrate environmental responsibility into higher education policy and practice.
In recognition of the ongoing collaboration and national support, President Sedeeq presented a commemorative plaque to the President of Iraq, symbolizing Koya University’s appreciation and its commitment to contributing to national educational advancement. Copies of the Strategic Plan were also formally handed over to the President as part of the university's transparency and outreach strategy.
The visit to Baghdad underscores Koya University's proactive engagement with state institutions and its commitment to fostering academic-government partnerships that support national development, research excellence, and sustainable innovation.
Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. It is on the foothills of a beautiful high mountain. Its campus has been carefully laid out to embrace the beautiful mountainous nature.
There are 4 Faculties and 2 Schools in KOU; Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Science and Health (FSCH), Faculty of Education (FEDU), Faculty of Humanities and Social Silences (FHSS), Shcool of Physical Education (SPHE) and School of Medicine (SMED).
Also, there are two research centers; Genome Center and Malai Gawra Center. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of Arkansas. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.
KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).
Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
