Koya University History Department Organizes Workshop on "Current State of Historiography in Kurdistan"
KOYA, Kurdistan Region - The History Department at the Faculty of Education, Koya University, organized a workshop titled "Current State of Historiography in Kurdistan."
The event took place on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at the university's presidency hall, with the attendance of Prof. Dr. Hoshyar Zaki, Assistant President of the University for Scientific Affairs and Graduate Studies; Prof. Dr. Safin Jalal, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education; Prof. Dr. Alan Salah Saadi, Assistant Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education for Student Affairs; history department faculty members; several professors from various university faculties; and students.
The workshop opened with the Kurdish national anthem "Ay Raqib" and a moment of silence to honor the spirits of Kurdish martyrs.
The workshop featured a panel discussion addressing several topics and issues related to historiography and the challenges facing historians and history specialists, presented as follows:
- "Rewriting Ancient Kurdish History Today" - presented by Prof. Dr. Kamran Mohammed Jalal
- "Historiographical Trends Under the Influence of Different Ideologies" - presented by Prof. Dr. Mahdi Othman Hussein
- "Kurdishness and Kurdish Nationalism from Historians' Perspective" - presented by Prof. Dr. Hiwa Hamid Sharif
- "Problems of Writing Political History in Southern Kurdistan" - presented by Dr. Kewan Jabbar Abdullah
The question and comment session from attendees enriched the workshop discussions, and participation certificates were distributed to the presenters at the conclusion of the event.
This workshop aligns with the third pillar of Koya University's strategic plan, which focuses on "Providing Community Service." The third objective addresses "solving social issues facing local communities to improve their quality of life," with the first strategy working on "utilizing Koya University's research for community projects" through finding solutions to society's social problems within the framework of research, seminars, workshops, conferences, and coordination.

Also, there are two research centers; Genome Center and Malai Gawra Center. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of Arkansas. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.
KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).
Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
