Koya University's Malay Gawra Research Center hosted an international symposium on "Literature as a Witness of History."
On Monday, March 4, 2024, in the presence of internal and external guests, instructors, and students of Koya University, as well as Vice President of Koya University for Scientific and postgraduate Affairs, Prof. Dr. Hishyar Zaki, Vice President of Koya University for Student Affairs, Asst. Prof. Dr. Qaraman Nader Sheikh Bzeni, Dean of the Faculty of Education at Koya University, Prof. Dr. Safin Jalal, and Director of the Malay Gawra Research Center, Prof. Dr. Nali Jawad Hamad, the symposium was carried out in Koya University's Presidency Hall.
The national anthem "Ay Raqib" and a standing ovation honoring the memory of the Kurdish martyrs preceded the start of the symposium.
The following part featured a speech by Prof. Dr. Nali Jawad Hamad, the Director of the Malay Gawra Research Center, who outlined the symposium's objectives.
The first panel of the symposium included five topics and was moderated by Prof. Dr. Hawzhin Slewa.
- "Salmi Saheb Qiran - A Living Witness of the End of the Baban Empire" was presented by Prof. Dr. Osman Dashti.
- "The Role of Literature in Documenting Historical Events" was presented by Hamai Hama Baqi.
- "Literature as History, the History of the Rawades in the Book of Poetry of Qatrani Tawrezi" was presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Ismail Shams.
- "Mawlawi and History - A Review of the Poet's Lyrical Poems" was presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Saboor Abdulkarim (Shkar).
- "Folklore Verses as a Source for Writing History – Dimdim Castle as an Example" was presented by Prof. Dr. Sarwar Abdulrahman.
Attendees' questions and comments were welcomed at the panel's conclusion, which complemented the symposium.
The second panel of the symposium was chaired by Dr. Amanj Salam Hamdamin and the following topics were presented:
- "Lawk as a historical source - political and military events of contemporary Kurdish history" was presented by Prof. Dr. Hoshmand Ali Mahmoud.
- "The Art of Narrative and the Importance of the Issue of Identity and Place" was presented by the journalist Mr. Miran Abraham.
- "Chia, Barf and Paz: Colonial Performances in Kurds, Desire and History" was presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Sardar Shangul.
- " Treaty of Lausanne from a political and historical treaty to a literary message and the manifestation of its psychological traumas (for example, the story "Lausanne" by Sherzad Hassan)" Lect. Trifa Mohammed Ahmed was presented.
- "The relationship between literature and history, (with examples of several poems)" was presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Srwsht Jawhar Hawez.
The panel moderators and presenters received certificates of participation at the conclusion of the symposium.

KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.
KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).
Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
