The Geography Department of the Faculty of Education at Koya University organized a workshop on Iraq's general census process titled "Kurds and Census: A Painful Past and an Uncertain Future."
On Monday, 20 Khazalwari 2724 (Kurdish calendar), corresponding to November 11, 2024, the workshop was held with the presence of the Assistant President of Koya University for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Asst. Prof. Dr. Yadgar Abdullah Ali, the Assistant President for Academic Affairs and Higher Studies, Prof. Dr. Hishar Zaki, and the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Dr. Safin Jalal, along with faculty members and students of the university.
The workshop began with the national anthem "Ey Reqib" and a moment of silence to honor the martyrs of Kurdistan.
Following this, the Head of the Geography Department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ashti Salam Sadiq, delivered an opening speech, explaining the goals and objectives of the workshop.
A short video prepared by the Media and Information Directorate of the Kurdistan Regional Government about the general census process in Iraq was presented.
The main panel of the workshop then commenced, chaired by Asst. Prof. Dr. Pishraw Samad Sadiq, and included the following topics:
- "The Use of Modern Techniques in Iraq's General Census", presented by Prof. Dr. Rostam Salam Aziz.
- "Iraq's 2024 Census: A Legal Path to Legitimize the Arabization Process", joint research by Dr. Ganjo Khasraw and Dr. Zhyar Khidr, presented by Dr. Ghancho Khasra.
- "Disputed Areas in the Context of Previous and Current Censuses", presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Hiwa Amin Shawani.
The workshop was enriched by participant questions and discussions with the speakers and concluded with the distribution of participation certificates to the presenters.

KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.
KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).
Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
