Koya University and President Jalal Talabani Foundation Announce Oil and Gas Training Course for Students
Koya University and the President Jalal Talabani Foundation announced the launch of a specialized training course in oil and gas for students during a press conference held in the presence of Koya University President Prof. Dr. Mohammed H. S. Zangana and President Jalal Talabani Foundation President Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Saber.
The press conference was held at PJTF in Sulaymaniyah on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.
The event was attended by Asst. Prof. Dr. Azhin Taher Saber, Vice President for Student Affairs, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Galawezh Bakr Babir, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Koya University, with the aim of providing a detailed and clear explanation of the training course.
General Framework of the Training Course
This course is organized within the framework of the memorandum of understanding signed between the President Jalal Talabani Foundation and Koya University, in coordination with the Southern Technical University in Basra.
The program offers a comprehensive training program for students from the petroleum engineering and chemical engineering departments in oil and gas fields, focusing on production, transportation, and processing of oil and gas in local and international fields, companies, and factories specialized in the oil and gas sector.
Training Course Details
Training Duration
The course extends for 15 days, from July 20, 2025, to August 5, 2025.
Number of Students and Supervisors
The total number of participants is 40 students with 5 supervising instructors, distributed as follows:
- 36 students from petroleum engineering and chemical engineering departments at Koya University
- 2 students from the petroleum and energy engineering department at Sulaymaniyah Polytechnic University
- 2 students from the petroleum engineering department at Komar University
- Five supervisors from specialized professors in petroleum engineering and chemical engineering departments at Koya University

- ZPEC Chinese Company - China
- Schlumberger Company - USA
- Almajal Company - Joint venture with different international companies
- Wood Group Company - Scotland
- Lukoil - Russia
- Iron and Steel Factory - Turkey joint venture
- Petrochemical Industry - Iraq
- North Rumaila Oilfields
Importance of the Training Course
Practical and Applied Aspects
The practical aspect is essential for these specializations, and this course represents an excellent opportunity for students to participate in practical training, especially after the halt of oil exports from the Kurdistan Region, where students in this field cannot adequately conduct their practical training within the Kurdistan Region.
Practical Experience and Exposure to International Companies
Participants will visit several local and international fields and companies during the training period, providing them with valuable practical experience, especially those companies not present in the Kurdistan Region such as the South Gas Company and the petrochemical plant. Additionally, they will visit two major oil fields in Iraq, namely the Rumaila field and the Zubair field, and gain experience in oil and gas transportation through maritime routes from the region's ports.

This strategy aims to manage joint projects with local and international companies and organizations, and manage training programs so that students can obtain practical training and specialized professional experience in their field of study.
This training course represents an important step toward linking academic education with practical reality, providing real opportunities for students to acquire practical experience and technical skills required in the specialized job market in the oil and gas sector.

Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. It is on the foothills of a beautiful high mountain. Its campus has been carefully laid out to embrace the beautiful mountainous nature.
There are 4 Faculties and 2 Schools in KOU; Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Science and Health (FSCH), Faculty of Education (FEDU), Faculty of Humanities and Social Silences (FHSS), Shcool of Physical Education (SPHE) and School of Medicine (SMED).
Also, there are two research centers; Genome Center and Malai Gawra Center. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of Arkansas. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.
KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).
Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
