Joint Committee from Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of Environment of Federal Government Visits Koya University
A joint committee from the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Environment of the Federal Government visited Koya University and was received by University President Prof. Dr. Mohammad H.S. Zangana.
On Sunday, October 5, 2025, a joint committee from the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Environment of the Federal Government, headed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Thaer Munem Hamid, visited Koya University and was received by University President Prof. Dr. Mohammad H.S. Zangana.
At the beginning of the meeting, Koya University President Prof. Dr. Mohammad H.S. Zangana welcomed the committee members and expressed his pleasure at their visit to the university.
During his remarks, the University President presented to the guests a summary of the history, components, and local and international standing of Koya University, and presented details about Koya University's Strategic Plan 2023-2027.
Koya University President Prof. Dr. Mohammad H.S. Zangana spoke about the importance of having a strategic plan for universities and institutions, explaining that Koya University has established the strategic plan as its roadmap and implements all its activities within the framework of the pillars.
The University President discussed the importance of coordination between universities and ministries, particularly universities and institutions and ministries in the central government, noting that Koya University has taken important steps in this area and signed several memoranda of understanding with universities and the Ministry of Environment.
Regarding universities' attention to the environment and sustainability, Koya University President Prof. Dr. Mohammad H.S. Zangana emphasized that the Green University is a main pillar of Koya University, and after one year of announcing the strategic plan, the Green University initiative was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Mr. Qubad Talabani, and within the framework of that initiative, they intensified their efforts to make Koya University a model for an environmentally friendly and sustainable university at the level of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

Prof. Dr. Ajeen Taher Saber, Dean of Faculty of Engineering Asst. Prof. Dr. Galawezh Bakr Bapir, Dean of Faculty of Science and Health Asst. Prof. Dr. Kosrat Nejad, Dean of Deanship of Research and Development Centers Asst. Prof. Dr. Halgurd Sarhang Maghdid, Director of ARO Journal Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdulbasit Kamil, University Council Secretary Lect. Chia Jawhar, Director of Health, Safety and Environment Dr. Bakhtiar Azad Abdullah, Director of Engineering and Projects Eng. Botan Anwar, Director of Gardens Eng. Peshtiwan Mohammad Taha, employee in the Maintenance Directorate Hussein Imam Hussein, and University Media Director Asst. Lect. Muhammed Karim Saedgul.
It is noteworthy that the joint committee of both ministries consisted of: Director of Project Management Department at the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education Asst. Prof. Dr. Thaer Munem Hamid (Committee Chairman), Asst. Lect. Alaa Kareem Jasim, Asst. Lect. Mohammed Rafid Ahmed, Eng. Mustafa Latif Ali, Eng.Naseer Adnan Jabr, and Hilal Mohammed Mousa.
Subsequently, the committee conducted a field visit inside the university campus to closely observe Koya University's procedures related to environmental protection and sustainability within the framework of the Green University initiative.

Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. It is on the foothills of a beautiful high mountain. Its campus has been carefully laid out to embrace the beautiful mountainous nature.
There are 4 Faculties and 2 Schools in KOU; Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Science and Health (FSCH), Faculty of Education (FEDU), Faculty of Humanities and Social Silences (FHSS), Shcool of Physical Education (SPHE) and School of Medicine (SMED).
Also, there are two research centers; Genome Center and Malai Gawra Center. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of Arkansas. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.
KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).
Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
