Student Excellence: Koya University Claims 1st and 3rd Places in Kurdistan Universities' Table Tennis Cup

The second and final day of the Kurdistan Universities' Student Table Tennis Championship concluded at Koya University on Thursday, February 5, 2026. The tournament, featuring ten universities, was held at the indoor sports hall of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Science in the presence of the Vice President for Student Affairs, Asst. Prof. Dr. Azhin Sabir Tahir, and the Dean of the Faculty, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nabaz Abdullah, along with various faculty members and students.

In the male students' category, the competition reached its peak in the "Golden Square" featuring the universities of Koya, Sulaimani, Duhok, and Komar. The University of Sulaimani claimed the 1st place title, followed by the University of Duhok in 2nd, while Koya University male students secured 3rd place. In the female students' category, Koya University students delivered a dominant performance to win 1st place, with the University of Duhok taking 2nd and the University of Sulaimani finishing 3rd. The remaining rankings were held by the universities of Zakho (4th), Cihan-Duhok (5th), and Salahaddin-Erbil (6th).

At the end of the championship, trophies and medals were presented to the winning teams and participants during an official ceremony. The event was organized by the Department of Sports and Artistic Activities in coordination with the Iraqi Federation of University Sports, with participation from the universities of Salahaddin, Sulaimani, Zakho, Akre, Duhok, Halabja, Cihan-Duhok, Komar, and Tishk International.

This event reflects Koya University's commitment to its 2023-2027 Strategic Plan and its core pillar, "Student Success and Employability." The university aims to balance academic learning with the development of personal and physical talents, believing that discovering students' potential helps build leadership qualities essential for serving the community, in line with the university’s motto: "A University for a Stronger Society."

Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. It is on the foothills of a beautiful high mountain. Its campus has been carefully laid out to embrace the beautiful mountainous nature.

There are 4 Faculties and 2 Schools in KOU; Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Science and Health (FSCH), Faculty of Education (FEDU), Faculty of Humanities and Social Silences (FHSS), Shcool of Physical Education (SPHE) and School of Medicine (SMED).

Also, there are two research centers; Genome Center and Malai Gawra Center. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of Arkansas. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.

KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).

Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
