Headed by University President Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Haseeb Zangana, the University Koya Strategic Plan Drafting Higher Committee convened its first meeting at the University Council conference room on July19, 2022.  Dr. Mohammed Zangana opened the meeting by discussing the importance of preparing the strategic plan for universities in general and for Koya University in particular. He stressed the need for drafting a plan that contains strategic goals that differ from those of other universities.

Thus, Koya University aims at creating a  strategic plan that takes into consideration the university’s current environment and the needs of our society.

Dr. Mohammed Zangana expressed the desire of the university administration and academic staff to take student’s academic experience to a higher level. Then, he added: "We want our students and graduates to achieve a high level of academic competency. But before that, we must ask; Does curriculum affect the educational experience of students or graduates? Do the number of students in classrooms and university's academic environment ensure student success and gradautes’s employability. 

The University President also emphasized that the pillars mentioned above and other important pillars should be highlighted in the strategic plan. He said: "After discussing the university’s strengths and weaknesses, we need to identify the strategic issues and select strategic goals that will later be studied and implemented to raise the university academic achievements.

After discussing the pillars of the strategic plan, Dr. Mohammed Zangna stressed that the improvement of academic achievements begins with writing and publishing research. Publishing impactful papers in all the areas of research is iparive to the success of the university. He also called for teamwork and revitalization of research centers.

Community outreach or Community engagement were also highlighted in the University President's opening speech. He emphasized the need to serve the community, identify and solve social problems, offer training courses, and assess the university's relationships with governmental and non-governmental organizations. Thus both community-based research and community engagement will be included in the strategic plan.

 The University President also talked about the necessity of working on economic prosperity of the region, finding solutions and opportunities, teaching and fostering entrepreneurship at the university. Moreover, he discussed the possibilities of transforming Koya University into a green university by relying more on clean energy, planting more trees and creating more gardens to create a clean and enjoyable environment for students.

During the meeting, Vice President for Postgraduate and Scientific Affairs Asst. Prof. Dr. Haider Lashkari also gave a presentation on the basics and objectives of drafting a university strategic plan by presenting examples of strategic plans created by both national and international universities. He discussed each plan and compared them to one another.

After that, all members of the committee exchanged their ideas and observations, set the agenda for the next meeting, and decided to hold meetings on a weekly basis.

It is worth mentioning that the Strategic Plan Drafting Committee was formed per University Decree No. 7/2/3306 issued on 5/7/2022. The committee members consist of University President Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Haseeb Zangana (Committee Chairperson), Vice President for Administrative and Financial Affairs Asst. Prof. Dr. Rostam Salam Aziz, Vice President for Postgraduate and Scientific Affairs Asst. Prof. Dr. Haider Lashkari, Vice President for Student Affairs Asst. Prof. Dr. Qaraman Nader, Asst. Prof. Dr. Yadgar Kamal Ahmed, Asst. Prof. Dr. Halgurd Sarhang Megadid, Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdul Basit Kamel Faeq, Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz, Dr. Dawan Jamal Hawzi, Dr. Bnar Jawdat, Dr. Rasti dlshad, Asst. Lect. Hana Mohammed Smail, and Director of Media and Communication Asst. Lect. Muhammed Karim Saedgul.

KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UKThe University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UKCihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021). Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
