A workshop on the Risks and Safety of (LPG) was held at Koya University

In collaboration with Dana Gas Company and Taq Taq Operating Company (TTOPCO), Department of Petroleum and Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at Koya University organized a workshop themed "LPG Heating System, Risks and Safety" at the workshop hall of the Faculty of Engineering.

The workshop “Heating System, Risks and Safety" took place on April 4, 2023, in the presence of Vice Presidents for Administrative and Financial affairs , Asst. Prof. Dr. Rostam Salam Aziz and the Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Asst. Prof. Dr. Galawezh Bakr, as well as a significant number of faculty teachers and students from both departments.

Mr. Rebwar Karim Abdulrahman's remark on an LPG entry point opened the session.

Two papers, which are listed below, were part of the workshop's first panel:

Asst. Prof. Fakhri Hadallah Ibrahim presented a paper titled Risk Assessments of LPG Heating System with Respect to Dow Fire & Explosion Index.

Mr. Chia Jamal Omar from Taq Taq Operating Company (TTOPCO) presented a study titled "Safety Using of LPG" that examined how to utilize LPG heating systems safely.

The following took place on the second panel:

Mr. Hussein Qadir, HSE Chemical Engineer and Industrial Expert from Dana Gas Company, presented " LPG Safety Awareness " on safety awareness of LPG heating system.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Jaafar Abdullah Ali Delo gave a presentation on the safety instrumented system (SIS).

The article "Recent LPG Explosions: Lessons for Accident Prevention and Preparation"

The most recent LPG heating system explosions and experiences with prevention and readiness were discussed by Mr. Mohammad Jamal Aul.

The goal of this workshop was to introduce the features and advantages of LPG heating systems, as well as the system design, dangers, and steps to minimize such risks and ensure system safety.

Department of Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering Department at Koya University was established in 2006. The department is unique of its kind in the Iraqi Kurdistan region because this field of engineering does not exist at other universities and higher education institutions within the region. The department is offering currently a Bachelor of Science with Honours [B.Sc. (Hons)] in Chemical Engineering that normally, takes a minimum of four years study.

The department of chemical engineering at Koya University aims at producing highly trained and professional chemical engineers that the Kurdistan region very much needs for the development. This being the case, the department provides a program of study that keeps a good balance between theoretical and laboratory based practical courses. In the later the student will receive training and conduct experiments in a number of laboratories such as the Unit Operation, Process Control, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics and Reactor laboratories. Undergraduate students will also experience engineering practice and management in two or three jobs while they work in industry during the summer training. Moreover, students will gain more industrial work experience through a number of industry site visits each academic year. That is why, the undergraduate study program at chemical engineering department /Koya University can offer the best mix of a high quality classroom-based education and practical experience.

On research related activities, the department strives to create an environment for its academic staff to conduct internationally competitive researches in their fields of expertise and provide consultancy services to a variety of industrial sectors including oil, gas and energy industries. Overall, the department aims at producing world class graduates and conducting high quality researches.

The vision of the Chemical Engineering Department at Koya University is to achieve national and international recognition in research and training students for meeting the challenging needs of industry and society.

The mission statement of the Chemical Engineering Department at Koya University can be summarized as; preparing students for professional practice and graduate study through a program that provides a strong fundamental technical and high quality undergraduate education, in addition to providing the industry sector with well-trained chemical engineers who will contribute to the process industries in the Kurdistan Region and worldwide. Also developing innovative science and technology through quality research in frontier areas of chemical engineering field is a core objective.

Department of Petroleum Engineering

We are the first Petroleum Engineering Department in Kurdistan and the second in Iraq. Every year more students come to this department from inside Kurdistan Region, Iraq, Syria and Iran. Because of our reputation for high quality teaching and the success of our graduates, students from other universities of Kurdistan and Iraq apply to join our department. The excellent teaching facilities and strong collaboration with oil industries consistently enable us to produce the types of graduates that industry needs. We aim to deliver an inspirational learning experience and pioneering work with a practical emphasis. Our staffs are innovative and creative practitioners who offer expertise in their field and bring their own energy and enthusiasm to their work. Their knowledge filters into our courses which are challenging and thought-provoking, making the Petroleum Engineering and Koya University an exciting and stimulating place in which to learn. And a continuing program of the Faculty development ensures that you have access to some of the best facilities and equipment in Kurdistan Region. As a growing engineering department of oil and academic excellence, we are always pushing the boundaries of knowledge. We have a vibrant and rapidly growing teaching community with expertise in such diverse areas as Drilling Engineering, Reservoir Engineering and Simulation, Engineering Production, and expertise in other engineering fields such as Materials Engineering, Fluid Flow and Engineering Design. Our department like the other departments in the Faculty is internationally recognized. The Faculty of Engineering and particularly the Petroleum Department have a great reputation for collaborating with leading employers to provide the students with the experience needed in today's business environment. In fact we are ranked one of the top Kurdish universities for good industry links.

Our success is proven by our excellent graduate employability record and the relation of the Petroleum Department with the local and international oil industries provides an excellent bridge into highly skilled work. Our graduates all start work in the industries with a very high salary soon after passing their final exams.

Finally I seize these words as an opportunity to welcome all the new students who joint our department for the current academic year. I am sure they will find a friendly environment, staffs and colleagues in the whole Faculty of Engineering and the university. Hope you spend a very excited and interested time with us.

The Department of Petroleum Engineering will be one of the best petroleum departments in the region, renowned for the excellence, impact and distinctiveness both of its research and teaching.
