The Department of Kurdish Language at the Faculty of Education, Koya University, commemorates the international Mother Language Day with a workshop celebration.

On Wednesday, February 21, 2024. The International Mother Language Day was commemorated with great enthusiasm, with the distinguished presence of Asst.Prof.Dr.Mohammed Haseeb Sedeeq, President of Koya University, alongside members of the Koya University Council, faculty members, and students from the Faculty of Education. A workshop titled "Language is identity ‘’organized by the Kurdish Language Department, emphasized the significance of preserving and celebrating linguistic diversity.

The workshop commenced with the national anthem "Ay Raqib" followed by a series of speeches by Prof. Dr.Darya Jamal Hawezi, the Head of the Department of Kurdish Language at Koya University's Faculty of Education, elucidating the workshop's objectives. 

Every year, the International Mother Language Day is celebrated, as designated by UNESCO on February 21, through various activities. These activities generally revolve around the importance of education in the mother language and the preservation of this language. The activities aim to raise awareness of language issues and identity preservation through academic research in the field of language.

The workshop featured a panel discussion on the significance of language and identity preservation. Asst. Prof. Dr. Nawzad Anwar Omar led the main panel, covering four key topics:

Prof. Dr. Darya Jamal Hawezi presented "Kurdish Language as the Essence of Kurdish Identity".

Asst. Prof. Dr. Talar Sabah Omar presented  "Conflict and the Collision of Languages".

Dr. Fawzia Abdullah Hamad presented "The Interconnection between Language and Society".

Asst. Prof. Dr. Jawan Bahaddin Ali presented "Assessing the Role of Mother Tongue in Kurdish Children's Media".

At the end of the workshop, certificates of participation were distributed to the presenters.

Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.

KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).

Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
