The Third International Conference on Petroleum: Waste Management in the Oil and Gas Industry was hosted by Koya University in collaboration with the universities of Koya, Basra, Missouri, and the President Jalal Talabani Foundation. On Sunday, April 28th, 2024, the event was inaugurated in the presence of Asst.Prof.Dr.Mohammed Haseeb Sedeeq, the President of Koya University, Adnan Al-Saraj, Advisor to the Prime Minister of Iraq for Education and Higher Education, Zhwan Sabir, Director of the Office of Deputy Prime Minister of Kurdistan Regional Government, and Amanj Saeed, Advisor to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Kurdistan Regional Government. The conference was attended by party and government officials, ambassadors from various countries in the Kurdistan Region, as well as local and foreign guests, Lectures, and students of Koya University,

The inaugural day of the university-hosted third international conference focused on the Petroleum sector. With the involvement of 52 researchers representing 15 countries and the examination of 42 scientific studies conducted by environmental researchers and activists at Koya University from April 28th to 30th, Koya University underscores its commitment to a strategic plan, one of the key pillars being the "Green University" initiative. This signifies that despite boasting expansive green spaces, the university is dedicated to environmental stewardship and aims to preserve the environment.

The conference commenced with the national anthem "Ay Raqib". Following this, a video showcasing the city and the university was presented. In the subsequent segment, the President of Koya University, Asst.Prof.Dr. Mohammad Haseeb Sedeeq delivered a speech. He emphasized in his message that safeguarding the environment, advocating for environmentalism, and establishing a green university are among the seven core pillars of Koya University's strategic plan.

The university president stated: "Our university stands at the forefront of shaping the future through academic inquiry, fostering community engagement, and nurturing the lifeblood of our nation. Institutionalizing sustainable practices at the core of our university's strategic plan for the next five years has been a steadfast commitment. It is imperative not only to enhance environmental stewardship but also to work towards transforming the university campus into a sustainable oasis, thereby contributing to a more sustainable way of life."

During another segment of the conference's first day, the keynote address was delivered by Jalal Talabani Foundation President, Ambassador Mohammed Sabir.

Furthermore, Amanj Abdulwahid Saeed, the representative of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research for the Kurdistan Regional Government, presented a speech on behalf of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research for the Kurdistan Regional Government during another session.

Another highlight of the conference's first day was the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Koya University and the Indian ambassador. The International Conference on Petroleum: Waste Management in the Oil and Gas Industry is scheduled to take place from April 28th to 30th, at Koya University.

Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. It is on the foothills of a beautiful high mountain. Its campus has been carefully laid out to embrace the beautiful mountainous nature.

There are 4 Faculties and 2 Schools in KOU; Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Science and Health (FSCH), Faculty of Education (FEDU), Faculty of Humanities and Social Silences (FHSS), Shcool of Physical Education (SPHE) and School of Medicine (SMED).

Also, there are two research centers; Genome Center and Malai Gawra Center. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of Arkansas. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.

KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).

Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
