President of Koya University Visits Deputy Minister of Oil in Federal Government

Baghdad - Iraq - Prof. Dr. Mohammed H.S. Zangana, President of Koya University, visited the Deputy Minister of Oil of the Federal Government of Iraq, Dr. Ezzat Sabir, in Baghdad.

On Thursday, August 7, 2025, Prof. Dr. Mohammed H.S. Zangana, President of Koya University, visited the Iraqi Ministry of Oil in Baghdad, accompanied by Ms. Kurdo Omar, member of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, and Asst. Lect. Muhammed Karim Saedgul, Director of Media at Koya University. There, they met with the Deputy Minister of Oil of the Federal Government of Iraq, Dr. Ezzat Sabir.

Training Program Discussion: At the beginning of the meeting, the university president discussed the training program for students from the Petroleum Engineering and Chemical Engineering departments, which was conducted jointly between Koya University and the President Jalal Talabani Foundation, in coordination with Southern Technical University in Basra. He highlighted that the program provided students with significant professional benefits and experience.

Oil Training Center Project: In another part of the meeting, the university president discussed with the Deputy Oil Minister the project to establish an Oil Training and Development Center, consulting on the mechanisms and steps for obtaining financial support and implementing the project.

Deputy Minister's Response: For his part, the Deputy Minister of Oil for Gas Affairs, Dr. Ezzat Sabir, expressed his satisfaction with the visit of the Koya University delegation and the Kurdish representative, member of the Council of Representatives, and reaffirmed his continued support and coordination with Koya University.

Significance of the Meeting: This meeting represents an important step in strengthening cooperation between academic institutions and government ministries in Iraq, particularly in the strategic oil and gas sector. The discussions focused on practical training opportunities for students and the development of specialized training centers that can contribute to building qualified human resources for Iraq's energy sector.

The initiative demonstrates Koya University's commitment to establishing strategic partnerships that benefit both students and the national economy, while supporting the development of technical expertise in one of Iraq's most vital industries.

Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. It is on the foothills of a beautiful high mountain. Its campus has been carefully laid out to embrace the beautiful mountainous nature.

There are 4 Faculties and 2 Schools in KOU; Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Science and Health (FSCH), Faculty of Education (FEDU), Faculty of Humanities and Social Silences (FHSS), Shcool of Physical Education (SPHE) and School of Medicine (SMED).

Also, there are two research centers; Genome Center and Malai Gawra Center. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of ArkansasKOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.

KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UKThe University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UKCihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).

Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
