Koya University President Receives Wuhan University Delegation to Enhance Cooperation in Clean Energy and Green University Initiatives

On Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the President of Koya University, Prof. Dr. Mohammed H.S. Zangana, received a delegation from Wuhan University, People's Republic of China, led by the Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering, Prof. Dr. Dong Zhuzhu, accompanied by Asst. Prof. Dr. Zhou Zhi and Dr. Ghamgin Rashid Izzat. 

The meeting was attended by Koya University’s leadership, including the V.P. for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Asst. Prof. Dr. Yadgar Abdullah; V.P. for Scientific Affairs and Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Hshyar Zaki; V.P. for Student Affairs, Asst. Prof. Dr. Azhin Tahir Sabir; the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Asst. Prof. Dr. Gelawij Bakr Babir; the Secretary of the University Council, Lect. Chia Jawhar; and the Director of Media, Asst. Lect. Muhammed Karim Saedgul. 

The meeting also featured the participation of Prof. Dr. Firas Mohammed, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Baghdad, and Eng. Rawa Mohammed Panjwini, CTO of Sunlead Technology.

At the beginning of the meeting, the President of Koya University welcomed the visiting delegation, highlighting the university's history, academic structure, and prestigious standing, while emphasizing the strategic importance of international academic coordination. 

Prof. Dr. Mohammed H.S. Zangana explained that Koya University, within the framework of its 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, has taken significant steps across its core pillars, particularly the "Green University" pillar. 

He pointed out that the Green University initiative includes pioneering practical measures in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, such as relying on clean energy and electricity conservation. 

He stressed that cooperation with leading Chinese institutions, specifically Wuhan University—a leader in energy technology—is essential for exchanging expertise and advancing these projects. 

For his part, Prof. Dr. Dong Zhuzhu expressed his admiration for Koya University's vision, confirming Wuhan University's readiness to share its expertise in clean energy and environmental technology through joint ventures and ongoing coordination.

 At the conclusion of the meeting, the President of Koya University presented a copy of the university’s Strategic Plan to the Chinese delegation. This was followed by a field visit to the Faculty of Engineering, where the delegation conducted a scientific seminar for the students, further enriching the knowledge-sharing aspect of the visit.

Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. It is on the foothills of a beautiful high mountain. Its campus has been carefully laid out to embrace the beautiful mountainous nature.

There are 4 Faculties and 2 Schools in KOU; Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Science and Health (FSCH), Faculty of Education (FEDU), Faculty of Humanities and Social Silences (FHSS), Shcool of Physical Education (SPHE) and School of Medicine (SMED).

Also, there are two research centers; Genome Center and Malai Gawra Center. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of Arkansas. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.

KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).

Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
