Koya University Commemorates Kurdish Journalism Day with a Workshop on the "Role and Impact of Media in the Kurdistan Region"
On the 128th anniversary of the publication of the first Kurdish newspaper, "Kurdistan," by Prince Miqdad Midhat Bedirxan, the Department of Kurdish Language at Koya University’s Faculty of Education organized a specialized workshop titled "The Role and Impact of Journalism in the Kurdistan Region."
The workshop was held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, to mark Kurdish Journalism Day. The event aimed to honor this national occasion by discussing various journalistic issues from linguistic, historical, and digital perspectives.
Strategic Plan and Community Service This initiative falls under Koya University’s comprehensive Strategic Plan, which operates through seven pillars to maximize the university's societal impact. Guided by its academic responsibility, the Department of Kurdish Language organized this workshop to address the evolving landscape of journalism and its profound connection to the Kurdish language and heritage.
Language and Kurdish Journalism
The workshop featured a main panel moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Hemin Abdulhamid Shams, focusing on four core scientific and historical themes that define the Kurdish journalistic landscape.
The discussions began with a presentation by Asst. Prof. Dr. Talar Sabah titled "Journalistic Language in the Kurdistan Region," using visual media as a model for analyzing contemporary media discourse. This was followed by a historical theme presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdulwahid Idris Sharif titled "The Role of Hamoon Newspaper in Koya’s Journalistic Movement," highlighting the city’s local journalistic heritage.
Addressing modern trends, Asst. Prof. Dr. Srusht Jowhar presented a vital axis on "Journalism in the Digital Age," exploring the profession's transformation under modern technology. The session concluded with a paper by Dr. Shaida Basim on "The Journalistic Experience of Abdulrazzaq Bimar," documenting the professional and creative milestones of his career.
The workshop concluded with interactive discussions on the importance of maintaining linguistic integrity in media and adapting journalistic practices to meet the demands of the digital era.
