In the Presence of the Deputy Prime Minister of the KRG and the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Green University Initiative was Announced at Koya University
Mr. Qubad Talabani said, "It is a great honor for me to be in Koya University to announce the Green University after 21 years of laying the foundation stone by Comrade Mam Jalal"
On Thursday, May 16, 2024, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Hasib Siddiq, Koya University President, and members of the university council welcomed Mr. Qubad Talabani, the deputy prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, and Dr. Aram Mohammed Qadir, the minister of higher education and scientific research, upon their arrival.
Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Qubad Talabani first planted a tree in Koya University's Presidency Garden as a representation of the Green University.
The Deputy Prime Minister then visited Koya University's green and eco-friendly model, accompanied by the university's president and the minister of higher education and scientific research.
Concurrently, Koya University had been recognized as a green University by Deputy Prime Minister of KRG Mr. Qubad Talabani, who additionally contributed 12 electric buses to the university's green university initiative fund.
Dr. Aram Mohammed Qadir, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, contributed 100 million dinars to the fund on the ministry's behalf.
Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Qubad Talabani and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Dr. Aram Mohammed Qadir, accompanied by the Koya University President, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Hasib Siddiq and members of the university council, visited the students' work exhibition within the framework of the Green University, entrepreneurship exhibition by companies, futsal match and final chess tournament for students.
The initiative includes some important and environmentally effective practices at Koya University campus as mentioned below:
1. Clean Transportation
2. Establishment of Ponds
3. Wastewater Treatment
4. Well Water Treatment for Potable Purposes
5. Transitioning the Heating System at the Dormitory to a Cleaner Energy Source
6. Encouraging Research on Sustainability
7. Green Research Park
8. Encouraging Energy-Efficient Buildings on the University Campus
9. Promotion of Awareness Campaigns among Students and Staff
Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. It is on the foothills of a beautiful high mountain. Its campus has been carefully laid out to embrace the beautiful mountainous nature.
There are 4 Faculties and 2 Schools in KOU; Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Science and Health (FSCH), Faculty of Education (FEDU), Faculty of Humanities and Social Silences (FHSS), Shcool of Physical Education (SPHE) and School of Medicine (SMED).
Also, there are two research centers; Genome Center and Malai Gawra Center. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of Arkansas. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.
KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).
Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
