Koya University in the Kurdistan Region and the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the field of medical sciences, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a joint project utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the treatment of cancer.

On Thursday, August 22, 2024, in the presence of Koya University's President, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Haseeb Siddiq; the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Asst. Prof. Dr. Gelawesh Baker Bapir; the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Goran Abdulrahman Mohammed; the Head of the Software Engineering Department, Dr. Soran Sabah Ahmed; the supervisor of the project and lecturer in the Software Engineering Department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Abdulbasit Kamel Faeq; the project leader and lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering, Asst. Lect. Peshawa Jamal Mohammed Ali; and the Director of Public Relations, Dr. Pakshan Fahmi, the MoU between Koya University and Karolinska Institute was signed. This step aims to enhance scientific and academic collaboration between the two institutions, particularly in the areas of research, data exchange, and advancements in prostate cancer treatment through AI applications.

This initiative aligns with Koya University's strategic plan, specifically its pillar of "Research and Innovation," to create opportunities for addressing health and scientific challenges within society. The collaboration seeks to introduce innovative solutions to the treatment of prostate cancer and promote academic research addressing real-world issues.

The Karolinska Institute, based in Stockholm, Sweden, is among the most renowned academic institutions in the field of medical sciences and is responsible for awarding the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine each year. Established in 1810, it has significantly contributed to human welfare through groundbreaking research and innovation.

This memorandum and joint work plan are based on the research project led by a lecturer at Koya University's Faculty of Engineering, Asst. Lect. Peshawa Jamal Mohammed Ali. The research focuses on the application of AI in prostate cancer treatment and is supervised by Dr. Abdulbasit Kamel Faeq and Dr. Saman Abdullah Jaf.
