This year, from April 28 to 30, 2024, Koya University hosted the Third International Oil and Gas Conference: Waste Management in the Oil and Gas Industry in conjunction with the Universities of Missouri, the University of Basrah, and the President Jalal Talabani Foundation.

The 3rd International Conference on Petroleum was of significant relevance for Koya University in 2023, the first public university in the Kurdistan Region. The Koya University’s Strategic plan's fundamental pillar was "Green University," a sensitive initiative by Koya University to play a larger role and impact in the domains of environmental conservation and environmental protection.

The Kurdistan Region and Iraq in the Middle East are two of the world's most oil-rich regions, with large reserves. Oil has become an important pillar of economic development in the region. Industrial variations generate a wide range of chemical wastes, demanding research and policy-making efforts by numerous governmental and non-governmental agencies, including universities.

In this regard, Koya University, based on the main pillar "Green University" of its strategic plan, wishes to play its part and ethical responsibility in tackling environmental challenges and conserving the regional and global environment. It intends to gradually expand this position to the regional and global levels, recognizing that environmental concerns require collaborative and comprehensive efforts.

The recommendations and proposed measures of the Third Oil and Gas Conference are organized as follows:

  1. Encourage oil and gas corporations to invest in advanced waste management and recycling technology, including suitable landfills.
  2. Create effective systems for enforcing trash disposal restrictions.
  3. Improve collaboration and knowledge exchange among universities, research institutions, government agencies, businesses, and industry stakeholders.
  4. Promote training and awareness of environmental best practices across industries, governments, and society to foster responsible behaviour.
  5. Promote transparency, data reporting, and accessibility in waste characterization.
  6. Establish recognized laboratories for waste testing and characterization.
  7. Organize the fourth international conference on petroleum in 2026.
