The "Malay Gawra" Research Center, affiliated with the Deanship of Research and Development Centers at Koya University, organized a scientific seminar titled "Women on the Path to Freedom and Awareness."
The seminar was held on Sunday, December 8, 2024, in the presence of the President of Koya University, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Haseeb Siddiq, Ms. Kurdo Omar, a member of the Iraqi Parliament, members of the university council, faculty members, and students. The event took place in the Presidential Hall of Koya University.
The seminar began with the national anthem "Ey Reqîb," followed by a moment of silence in honor of the martyrs of Kurdistan. Pro. Dr. Nali Jawad, Head of the "Malay Gawra" Research Center, delivered an opening speech highlighting the objectives and significance of the seminar.
First Panel: Titled "Legal and Psychological Dimensions of Violence Against Women," moderated by Dr. Nazira Saber Mustafa, and included the following topics:
- "Changes in the Personal Status Law and Their Negative Impacts Compared to the Laws of the Kurdistan Region," presented by Ms. Kurdo Omar, Member of the Iraqi Parliament.
- "Legal Frameworks Applied to Combat Violence Against Women and Girls," presented by Amin Qadir.
- "Criminal Protection of Women from Domestic Violence: Between Legal Texts and Practical Implementation."
Second Panel: Titled "Women's Awareness: A Path to Reducing Violence," moderated by Dr. Pakhshan Fahmi, and included the following topics:
- "Risks of Cyber Harassment Against Women," presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Jwan Bahadin.
- "Social Barriers to Women’s Participation in the Workforce," presented by Dilsoz Shafiq, Head of the Dabin Organization for Promoting Democracy and Human Rights.
- "The Role of Women's Organizations in Combating Violence Against Women," presented by Rukhosh Ismail, a civil activist and Director of Programs and Projects at the "Emma" Organization for Human Development.
The seminar featured interactive discussions enriched by participants' questions and feedback. The event concluded with the distribution of participation certificates to the presenters.
Koya University, through SDG3 "Addressing social issues facing local communities to improve their quality of life," which falls under the initiative "Serving the Community" and represents the third pillar of the university's 2023-2027 strategic plan, is actively working on developing programs and initiatives to combat issues such as drug addiction, violence, and youth challenges in local communities. These efforts include:
- Launching collaborative projects between the university and the community to tackle these challenges.
- Engaging academics in partnerships with international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Health Organization for scientific activities and awareness campaigns.
- Supporting academic research to study the root causes and impacts of drug use among the region’s youth.

KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.
KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).
Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
