Koya University Celebrates the First Anniversary of the ‘Green University Initiative’ with a Series of Events
Koya, Kurdistan Region – May 15, 2025 Koya University hosted a wide range of activities in celebration of the first anniversary of the ‘Green University Initiative,’ an event that underscored the institution’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community engagement. The day-long program included environmental awards, exhibitions, cultural festivities, and academic showcases that reflected the university’s strategic plan for 2023–2027.
The opening ceremony, held in the Presidential Hall of Koya University, was attended by several distinguished guests, including the representative of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Dr. Aaim Abdullah Saeed, and the President of Koya University, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed Haseeb Siddiq.
In his opening remarks, President Dr. Mohammed Haseeb Siddiq highlighted the university’s progress since the launch of the initiative by Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Qubad Talabani on May 15, 2024. "Today, May 15, 2025, marks a year since the Green University Initiative was first announced. Various teams at our university have begun implementing procedures aligned with the initiative’s goals. The design and planning phases are complete, and with necessary approvals, implementation will soon begin. We aim to complete these projects by the end of 2027," he stated.
Dr. Siddiq emphasized the initiative’s broader impact, particularly in promoting a green economy and eco-tourism, noting that it is expected to create over 1,000 job opportunities. He reiterated the university’s dedication to sustainability as a core pillar of its strategic plan, which includes:

Following the president’s address, Dr. Aaim Abdullah Saeed commended the university's leadership for its proactive approach in integrating sustainability into its operations and aligning academic efforts with labor market needs. He emphasized the essential role of universities in fostering community engagement and developing a green and knowledge-based economy.
University Award for Environmental Protection and Sustainability
The first event of the day included the announcement of the winners of the ‘University Award for Environmental Protection and Sustainability’ at the faculty level. The awards recognized outstanding student initiatives and research projects that demonstrated excellence in sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
Return of Digitized Manuscripts: “The Great Malay Gawra”
A special ceremony was held for the return of digitized manuscripts of “The Great Malay Gawra” to the Central Library of Koya University. This milestone contributes to the university’s ongoing efforts in digitization and preservation of cultural heritage, in line with the strategic goal of enhancing digital infrastructure and academic resources.
Koya Day Activities and Exhibitions
As part of Koya Day, a diverse set of exhibitions and festivals were organized across the campus:
Hybrid Car Exhibition: Held in front of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, this exhibit featured modern eco-friendly vehicles, demonstrating advancements in sustainable transport technologies.
Enterprise Exhibition: Aligned with the "Student Success and Employability" pillar, the exhibition attracted a variety of entrepreneurial companies and start-ups, providing students with networking opportunities and exposure to the labor market.
Student Project Showcase: Students from various faculties presented their research and innovation projects, further reflecting Koya University’s emphasis on student engagement and academic excellence.
Cultural Festival by the Kurdish Language Department
In celebration of the region’s rich cultural heritage, the Department of Kurdish Language at the Faculty of Education hosted a vibrant cultural and heritage festival in the central park of the university. The traditional Kurdish black tent was a centerpiece of the event, symbolizing the celebration of the first anniversary of the Green University Initiative and highlighting the integration of sustainability with cultural identity.
