Koya University Delegation Visits The Higher Committee for Education Development in Iraq (HCED)

A delegation from Koya University headed by University President Prof. Dr. Mohammad H. S. Zangana visited Baghdad to conduct several meetings and conferences.

On Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Koya University President Prof. Dr. Mohammad H. S. Zangana, accompanied by Iraqi Parliament member Ms. Kurdo Omar and Koya University Director of Media Asst. Lect. Muhammed Karim Saedgul Barzanji, visited the The Higher Committee for Education Development in Iraq, where they were received by Professor Hamid Khalaf Ahmed, PM Advisor & Executive Director of the Higher Committee for Education Developments in Iraq.

At the beginning of the meeting, Koya University President Prof. Dr. Mohammad H. S. Zangana expressed his pleasure at visiting the Higher Education Development Committee of Iraq and meeting Prof. Dr. Hamed Khalaf Ahmed, Advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister, and pointed to the importance of this type of visit and coordination.

In his remarks, the University President spoke about the history of Koya University as the first university established outside provincial boundaries and founded by President Mam Jalal, and presented the position and level of Koya University at both national and international levels.

Subsequently, Koya University President Prof. Dr. Mohammad H. S. Zangana discussed Koya University's Strategic Plan 2023-2027, which they work on as a roadmap, and also referred to the pillars and implementation steps.

During the meeting, Iraqi Parliament member Ms. Kurdo Omar thanked Iraqi Prime Minister's Advisor Prof. Dr. Hamed Khalaf Ahmed for his welcome and spoke about how students from Koya city can benefit from opportunities in the Iraqi Scholarship Program.

For his part, Professor Hamid Khalaf Ahmed, PM Advisor & Executive Director of the Higher Committee for Education Developments in Iraq, expressed his pleasure at the visit of the Koya University delegation and expressed his support for Koya University's strategic plan, emphasizing that it is a source of joy to have a university in Iraq that works according to a strategic plan and chooses the plan's pillars in a way that aligns with today's job market requirements and global challenges.

The Iraqi Prime Minister's Advisor also noted that all pillars of Koya University's strategic plan are important, and emphasized the importance of both the "Digitalization" and "Green University" pillars.

At the end of the meeting, the Koya University President presented a copy of the university's strategic plan to the Advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister and Executive Director of the Higher Education Development Committee of Iraq, Prof. Dr. Hamed Khalaf Ahmed.

Koya Municipality Mayor Engineer Mohammad MirHaj was also present at the meeting.

Strategic Framework

Koya University, as an academic institution and higher center for education and teaching, views with great importance the establishment of institutional relationships with ministries, agencies, and local and international institutions. It has worked with support from its strategic plan and main pillar of "Community Service" so that these relationships serve to further develop society and strengthen the impact of various community institutions in solving challenges and problems.

Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. It is on the foothills of a beautiful high mountain. Its campus has been carefully laid out to embrace the beautiful mountainous nature.

There are 4 Faculties and 2 Schools in KOU; Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Science and Health (FSCH), Faculty of Education (FEDU), Faculty of Humanities and Social Silences (FHSS), Shcool of Physical Education (SPHE) and School of Medicine (SMED).

Also, there are two research centers; Genome Center and Malai Gawra Center. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of Arkansas. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.

KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).

Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
