Kurdistan Universities' Table Tennis Championship Concludes at Koya University
The Kurdistan Universities' Table Tennis Championship officially concluded at Koya University on Thursday, February 5, 2026. The two-day tournament, hosted by the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Science, was organized by the Department of Sports and Artistic Activities in collaboration with the Iraqi Federation of University Sports, featuring teams from ten different universities.
The first day of the men's competition saw intense group stages. In Group A, the University of Duhok took the lead followed by Koya University, while in Group B, the University of Sulaimani secured the top spot with Komar University in second place. Moving into the final rounds on the second day, the University of Sulaimani triumphed to win the championship title (1st place), with the University of Duhok finishing 2nd and Koya University taking 3rd place.
In the women’s category, the competition showcased exceptional skill and sportsmanship over the two days. The final standings saw the host, Koya University, winning the 1st place trophy. The University of Duhok secured 2nd place, and the University of Sulaimani finished 3rd. The remaining positions were held by the University of Zakho (4th), Cihan University-Duhok (5th), and Salahaddin University-Erbil (6th), following a series of competitive matches held at the university's indoor sports arena.
This championship serves as a practical application of the "Student Success and Employability" pillar within Koya University’s 2023-2027 Strategic Plan. By hosting such regional athletic events, the university seeks to balance academic excellence with the development of students' physical and personal skills. The university leadership believes that nurturing these talents is vital for preparing students to serve the community, as sports foster leadership and teamwork—qualities that are essential for their future professional and social contributions.

Koya University (KOU) is located in the city of Koya (Koy Sanjaq) which is 1.0 hr drive to the East of the Kurdistan Region capital Erbil (Arbil, Hewlér) in Kurdistan Region of F.R. Iraq. Moreover, at KOU there is an English Language Center (BELC) at KOU has been opened with the sponsorship of IREX and American embassy in Baghdad as well as with the support of Spring International Language Center of The University of Arkansas. KOU has two Scientific Journals; ARO-The Scientific Journal of Koya University, which is indexed by Clarivate Analytics (ESCI), and Koya University Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences (KUJHSS). KOU is a proactive member of Erasmus/ Marhaba Project and Erasmus+.
KOU signed many Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with many International Universities, e.g., The University of Arkansas (June 2015). The Lulea University in Sweden (April 2014), The University of Nottingham in the UK, The University of Buckingham in the UK (Oct 2008), Belkin University in Turkey (Sep 2009) The University of Greenwich in the UK, Cihan University-Erbil (2021) and Tishk International University (2021).
Koya University is a memebr of The Association of Arab Universities and the International Association of Universities.
