KOYA | University Media
In pursuit of rigorous academic research aimed at sustainable water resource conservation and management, Koya University, in collaboration with the University of Basrah and in coordination with the Dukan Dam Directorate, has launched an extensive joint research project assessing the Dukan Dam complex.
Interdisciplinary Expertise and Core Scientific Domains
Operated under the framework of the scientific Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both institutions, the research team comprises specialized scholars and field researchers from Koya University’s Faculty of Engineering and the Marine Science Centre at the University of Basrah. The primary objective is to evaluate and model water resource infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region across critical sub-disciplines: Hydrology, Hydrogeology, and Environmental Geophysics.
The project is structured into two systematic phases spanning six months of empirical fieldwork, utilizing state-of-the-art geo-environmental testing instruments and specialized sensors. Phase One concluded successfully following two weeks of intensive, continuous on-site investigations.
Informing Strategic Public Policy and Institutional Alignment
Upon project completion, synthesized data and technical findings will be presented in a comprehensive policy report and submitted to the Kurdistan Regional Government during an academic symposium to support scientific decision-making regarding water security, dam safety, and irrigation management.
This initiative is deeply rooted in the core pillars of the Koya University Strategic Plan (2023–2027), specifically prioritizing "Research and Innovation" alongside "Community Service." The joint endeavor marks a pivotal step toward reinforcing academic synergy across Iraqi universities, deploying domestic expertise to preserve and optimize vital national assets.
