Columbia University's continuous Mesopotamian Monuments Documentation Project
A topographical overview of all ancient monuments and sites from Iraqi Kurdistan (southwestern Turkey) to southern Iraq is provided in Documenting Mesopotamian Monuments. This research, which is still in progress, covers ancient through modern history. Mesopotamian mountain carvings, ancient Christian temples and churches, early Islamic architecture, the Ottoman empire, and 20th century architecture are all featured. You may see the breadth and depth of Mesopotamia's ancient past through the image database. The study was designed and carried out by Professor Zainab Bahrani and is based on an ongoing effort to determine the monuments' whereabouts and record them digitally so that they can be preserved for preservation and future studies in the region. The project, which started in 2010, is funded by the President's Global Innovation Fund of Columbia University, with additional funding provided by the Kest Foundation and the Carnegie Endowment.
